Depression

I did not expect to experience depression, both the overt major depression of the last decade or the covert depression that preceded it.  The overt depression–after my crash–saved my life from a continuation of the hell of living an unhappy life while covertly depressed.  It was a hard way to do it, but it gave me back my life.

  1. my boyfriend is suffering from depression. can you recommend any books for he and i to read? he has the kind of depression where he keeps everything inside. he is not violent and does not substance abuse, so i’m not sure if any text with those as the main topics would be helpful. thanks.

  2. There are a number of books that might be helpful. One I am reading just now is called Is He Depressed or What? by David Wexler. It discusses both overt and covert (male type) depression but it is written for partners like yourself to understand his depression and how you might go about dealing with it. Another good book is the one I mentioned in my first posting, The Pain Behind the Mask, by John Lynch and Christopher Kilmartin.

I have posted a list of other books, with brief annotations, to my website, http://users.wildblue.net/outofdarkness/. You might check these out as well.

    I hope this helps.
